The official uniform:
The uniform is sold at the academy. For the first class, it is suggested to wear a comfortable martial arts, yoga or training suit which allows to move freely. Colored capoeira pants can be worn in class, but the white abadá is mandatory for the formal occasions sush as official demonstrations and rodas. The capoeiristas of the past never had a uniform, because of the conditions in which they found themselves: as slaves or as outlaws, it would not be very clever on their part if they used a costume that identified them. In the early 20th century, capoeiristas played in their everyday clothes. Regional's trend toward white uniforms may have come from the fact that people played capoeira after attending Mass, right in front of the church, and that the white shirts and pants commemorate the white suits (straight or diagonal) that used to be fashionable in Bahia. Some say that you can tell if a player was good by the state of his suit afterwards: if he goes close to the ground and does not touch, then his suit stays clean and he must be a good player. In 1941, Mestre Pastinha adopted the black and yellow uniform (inspired by the colors of his favorite soccer team), still used by the angoleiros (Angola students and capoeiristas), aiming to integrate it definitively in the society |
